Procedures when connecting peripherals

Printer

When connecting a printer to your computer make sure you computer is turned of first. After this connect the printer cable to the printer and then the other end to the parallel port on the back of the PC. This connector is D-shaped and will only go in one way. Turn the computer on when you have done this and check to see if it is working.

Digital camera

USB cable lets you connect your digital camera to your computer. Almost all digital cameras come with a USB cable. Just plug one end into the camera and the other into the computer. Once you've plugged the cable into the computer you click into photos and your photos should come up on the screen.

Speakers

When connecting speakers to your computer make sure your computer is turned off before you connect them. After this you plug your speakers to the back of the computer tower where there will be a number of small, round, coloured-coded sockets. The one to plug your speakers into is usually green. It may also be marked with a headphones symbol or be labelled ‘Audio out’. When you turn on your computer and speakers check the sound is working by checking the volume so you can hear if it’s working.

Microphone

When connecting a microphone to your computer you will find on either the back or front of the computer a rounded socket which could also be marked with a microphone symbol beside it and this is where you will plug your microphone into. With the symbol beside the socket this will make it easier to find. Once you have done this check to see if the microphone is working.
